On September 25, 2005 the Prince George's County Women's Bar had a beautiful Sunday afternoon tea we were honored to have Judge Lewine (who started our chapter) in attendance (see below) as well as her daughter Judge Sherrie Krauser (see left). Guests were greeted by our elegant President, Angelia Rowe-Garner (see right). Immediate past-president Karren Pope-Onwukwe enjoyed the delicious scones and fruit (see delow left).

Thanks to Pam White for her inspirational talk invoking the memory and spirit of Margaret Brent. Thanks Judge Cathy Serrette for opening your home, thanks Judge Julia Weatherly for always being there, and thanks Judge Toni Clark (aka Mrs. Woods) for being my personal role model.

Last year the WBA recognized our chapter with a Pro Bono Award for our efforts to reach out to the girls in our juvenile justice system. In 2005, PGWBA will continue our Waxter Outreach Project every Saturday morning in March (Women's History Month) from 9:00a.m. unitl 12 NOON. Come one Saturday or all four Saturdays. Our theme for the March 2005 project is:

EXPRESS YOURSELF!

Saturday, March 5th - Therapist Merry Goldberg will lead a writing , role-playing program on self-esteem and create an affirmation book.
Saturday, March 12th - Using paint and a sheet we will create a mural as a visual expression of the affirmation book.
Saturday, March 19th - Partnering with the Black Women's Bar Association of Southern Maryland (BWBA) the format will be a talk show discussing self-expression.
Saturday - March 26th - Partnering with Joe's Movement Emporium self- expression through movement ending with a PARTY!

This Saturday was absolutely "off the chain"!! (translation-it was wonderful!!!) Janet Nesse-you rock!! (translation -you did a great job).

As you all know, we're coming up on the third Saturday, which is the talk show. Your host, (Angie Winfrey-I'm Oprah's long lost cousin-ha ha ha), is soliciting suggestions for thought provoking questions to ask the girls. Please e-mail suggested questions to Angie on or before Thursday.

Hopefully as many of you as possible will come out and be a part of the studio audience. We would love to have you on the PG WBA's Angie Winfrey Show.

Week 1: Affirmation Books

Our first Saturday was great, we owe a debt of gratitude to Merry Goldberg for establishing a bond and sense of trust with the young ladies at Waxter. Some of the girls remember us from last year. I believe that each one of us has the capacity to do great things, but we must begin it! I invite you to join us again this Saturday, March 12, 2005 from 9:00 til 12 noon.

The Thomas J. S. Waxter Children's Center started in November 1963. Then, it was called the Southern Maryland Children's Center (Chapter 38, Acts of 1962). The Center was renamed in 1963 to honor Thomas J. S. Waxter, the Director of the State Department of Public Welfare from 1953 until his death in 1962. (Chapter 131, Acts of 1963).
The Center is a facility for juvenile detention. In January 2000, it became a facility for females only. Alternately known as the Young Women's Facility of Maryland at Waxter, it houses up to ninety minors (from as young as age 10 to as old as age 19). It also houses a program offering secure commitment for up to twenty-eight girls. Located in a semi-rural part of Anne Arundel County, the Center serves Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Howard, and Prince George's counties, and Baltimore City (Code 1957, Art. 83C, sec. 2-117).
